It is typically belt-driven off the engine’s crankshaft and engages through an electromagnetic clutch when you switch the AC on. Its job is to pressurize refrigerant so that the rest of the AC system can do the work of removing heat from the cabin.

The automotive compressor is one of the few components in a modern vehicle that converts engine power directly into cabin comfort, and it does that by cycling refrigerant through a continuous loop of compression and expansion.

What Does the AC Compressor Do in a Car

The refrigerant in your AC system travels in a closed loop, but it needs to be in different physical states at different points in that loop to absorb and release heat effectively. What does the AC compressor do in a car is take low-pressure refrigerant gas coming back from the evaporator and compress it into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas.

Once the refrigerant is compressed, it moves to the condenser at the front of the vehicle, where it releases heat to the outside air and transitions into a liquid. That liquid then passes through an expansion valve, drops in pressure rapidly, and gets cold. The cold refrigerant then flows through the evaporator inside the dash, absorbs heat from the cabin air being blown across it, and the cycle repeats.

Without a functioning compressor, refrigerant never gets pressurized, the cycle never completes, and the air coming out of your vents stays at ambient temperature no matter how low you set the thermostat.
